Careers Kitchen

Careers Kitchen

Careers Kitchen is an initiative aimed at cultivating pathways to meaningful employment and education for refugees and people seeking asylum.

Careers Kitchen is a Perth-based project created to connect refugees and people seeking asylum with opportunities for work and study. In order to best complement the existing employment support provided by organisations in the sector, the program is flexible, working alongside other initiatives to meet the needs of people seeking asylum and ensuring no-one falls through the gaps. The initiative provides intensive one-on-one support and mentoring to people seeking asylum and refugees who are looking to work or study in WA, alongside:

  • Referrals to other agencies and job-seeking opportunities
  • Support with training (e.g. white card licensing)
  • Interview training and preparation
  • Provision of information on Australian workplace cultures and policy
  • Ongoing support once employment secured
  • Assistance with job-specific tailoring of resumes and cover letters

Careers Kitchen is based at The Asylum Seeker Hub (a creative inter-agency response to limited resources across the legal and welfare sector to assist people seeking asylum. Through the collective efforts of CARAD, The Humanitarian Group, Red Cross, Mercy Care, ASSETS, Welcome to Australia and Riverview Community Services, people seeking asylum in Perth can come to one location and access support related to their legal, welfare and psychological needs.) Alongside the provision of intensive employment mentoring support, Careers Kitchen volunteers cultivate relationships with employers in WA to build a network of organisations across the Perth metropolitan area providing work experience and employment to people seeking asylum. The next step for Careers Kitchen is the establishment of a training café where members will gain hands-on experience in the hospitality sector.
